Let's go over why these are bad excuses...
“Everything in the cloud is automatically backed up for me...to the cloud.”
Like most cloud platforms, Salesforce is not responsible for protecting you from user-inflicted data loss and corruption. YOU are responsible for building a complete technology foundation that includes comprehensive backup and recovery.
For their own uptime and availability as well as Disaster Recovery purposes, Salesforce replicates clients’ production environments and stores them on backup tapes for 90 days. If you discover the data loss within three months, Salesforce Data Recovery services can look for your data in the tape backups based on parameters that you give them. They’ll then send you your data in .CSV format for a cost of $10,000 and a six to eight week waiting period. For this reason, Salesforce says their “Data Recovery is a last resort process.”
“I don’t have time to implement another app.”

“We use a data transfer tool to constantly synchronize our Salesforce data to a SQL database. So any time a change is made in Salesforce, it is replicated out to the backend database.”
Synchronizing your production data to a SQL database may overwrite good data with bad data. A SQL database offers little to no visibility into daily data changes, so you’d need to rely on end users to inform you of a data loss or corruption. To recover lost or corrupted data, you would have to roll back to a previous backup, overwriting more than just the lost or corrupted data in the process.
“I think our IT team already does that for us...”
At a high level, data loss and corruption could incur increased labor costs, data recovery fees, lost reputation, revenue impact, compliance fines, and a loss in productivity. It’s impact could be felt across the entire company, especially in sales, customer service, marketing, finance, legal & compliance, and the C-Suite. Every Salesforce user has a stake in their company’s data. For many users, especially those in sales, customer service, and the C-Suite, this data is key to good job performance and proper decision making.
“It’s not the right time for us right now.”

“We don’t let our users enter data. We do it for them so they don’t mess up.”
This seems time-consuming and difficult to scale for large organizations...but if it works for you, keep it up.
“We've never suffered a data loss in the past, which means we don't need a backup.”
How do you know that you’ve never lost or corrupted data? Without an automated data modification notification system, you may not find out about data loss or corruption until long after the incident occurred.
“My favorite part of my Monday morning is taking hours to search through thousands of CSV. files, to find the Chatter feed, of the Opportunity, of the Account, created by the sales rep, who was fired three years ago, that was deleted by the new hire two weeks ago, that we just found out about last night.”
The above scenario is common at many organizations. When new sales reps start, they want to make sure they're starting with a clean slate. “No need to keep those old Chatter feeds.” If a data loss does occur, your organization will need to find and restore the data from .CSV files. This will likely be a long, arduous project. Then, once you’ve restored the Chatter feeds, how will you re-associate them back to their parent Opportunity and Account?
“We’re careful not to make any mistakes.”
